True Liberty

In the first of the Ten Commandments God says, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:2-3)

Erwin Lutzer, pastor of Moody church in Chicago writes: “Man is in rebellion against God. It all began with Lucifer, who said, “I will be like the Most High.” He began to challenge God’s supremacy. A drop of Lucifer’s rebellion has fallen on every human heart. Consequently, we as a race are also in rebellion against God. We share in that tragedy called sin.”

Take for example the so-called “Separation of Church and State.” This doctrine isn’t just a political position our government has taken, it is a moral position. The purpose behind the modern-day interpretation of this teaching is to guarantee that God doesn’t intrude into the affairs of men. The original purpose of the separation clause was to protect the church from government intrusion. Back during the time of our nation’s founding fathers, many in England weren’t being allowed to worship as they pleased and it was for this reason that some of the colonists left England for the “New World;” it was for religious freedom. The original concept of the “separation of church and state” meant for government to keep their hands out of religious concern but today it insures that God keeps His hands out of the affairs of men because man no longer worships God, he worship himself (Romans 1:18-32).

God told Israel as part of the first commandment, “You shall have no other gods before me” because there is a tendency for fallen man to worship himself. I’ve noticed that the 4th of July is no longer a day when we celebrate liberty and freedom from religious and governmental tyranny. The concepts of freedom and liberty have been redefined. The modern-day celebration of the 4th of July is now a celebration of the independence and liberty and freedom to do as we please…in essence to be our own god.

In the Old Testament book of Habakkuk chapter one, we find that the Chaldeans used nets to capture fish. It goes on to say, they then burned incense to their fishing net. (1:16). Rather than give all the glory to God for helping them to catch fish, they worshipped their nets. Similarly and sadly, man prefers to thank his government, his employer, or even the sweat of his own brow, rather than God who makes the blessings possible. God told Israel, “You shall have no other gods before me.” Because there is a tendency for fallen man to worship himself and we all know how we feel when we are around a person who is “stuck on himself.” This person makes us “sick to our stomachs.” Try to imagine what the Holy God of Creation, the only One who “Alone is worthy of worship and praise” feels.

Over the last several years we have witnessed kids killing each others in our schools. Do our nation’s leaders appeal to God and His Word for the answer? No, we try to get into the minds of these kids and at first we tried to blame it on their environment. But some of these “killers” came from homes where the parents seemed to love them and care for them. Some have tried to blame it on guns but many of these kids weren’t raised with guns in the home; they set out to find the guns and even persuade people to get the guns to them. The way some have reported these hideous crimes you would think that the guns suddenly came alive and walked into the homes of these young criminals.

Still some are blaming the Internet for giving the kids access to plans for making bombs. Others are blaming the culture’s music for its violence-inspiring lyrics and video games. When is someone going to admit that it isn’t the environment and it isn’t the guns? When is someone going to admit that it isn’t the Internet and the music? It is none of these things—the Internet, violent rap music and video games are all just tools. The root problem lies in the sinful hearts of these kids. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold the young men behind the Columbine High School massacre (April 20, 1999), killed their fellow students because they represented the people that had offended them. They were paying them back. They hated them. Guns don’t hate. The Internet doesn’t hate. Music doesn’t hate. People hate. Let me share with you a quote from the web site of Eric Harris. “My belief is that if I say something it goes. I am the law. If you don’t like it you die. If I don’t like what you want me to do, you die. If I do something incorrect oh…well you die.” Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed their fellow students at Columbine High because they worshipped themselves—they were gods unto themselves.

As a nation, we have evicted God from among us and are receiving the consequences of our decision. The Ten Commandments are no longer allowed in court halls and on our school walls. Without God, liberty becomes a license to do as we please. True liberty is not the freedom to do as we please but to do what is right. God’s Word teaches what is right. Let me close this article with a passage from the Bible. Psalm 19:7-11 says, “The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.”

no one needs to worship your imaginary god. Happily, the founders of the US ignored your ignorant bible and didn’t put this into our law.

Funny how your god evidently allows kids to be killed in schools. I’m sure at least some of them were praying for help, and your god did nothing at all. Just as if it were imaginary.

If God is “imaginary” to you, why your concern? Why waste your time commenting? If there is no God and no “Ten Commandments” then allowing kids to be killed in schools is inconsequential…everything goes. It’s amazing how people like you who say God is “imaginary” need to step into His moral world to express outrage at posts like mine. If God is a figment of one’s imagination, there is really no right or wrong. But if He is real, and sovereign, as the Bible teaches, one day you will stand before Him as He judges you according to the Ten Commandments. Repent and fall before Jesus Christ the King before it’s eternally too late. After death come the judgment.

        Hi chuck,

The reason I stand against your cult’s lies is that they cause real harm with your ignorance and hate.

it’s a common attempt by a christian to try to convince non-christians to not show how your lies fail.

I do love how you have claimed that if your fantasies aren’t true, then you have no problem with kids being killed. That is expected from a cultist who has no problem when his god kills kids for no reason too.

Happily, humans have morals, and no god or cultist is needed to have them. Morals are a human invention and are subjective. That means we aren’t stuck with the ignorant and hate of people from a couple of thousand years ago.

I do enjoy christians who have entirely subjective morals since you have no problem with yrou god doing things that you, hopefully, would be horrified if a human did the same. Your morality is subject to who someone is, not some objective morality attached to an action.

I also love the lies from christians that morality is only from their god, when we can see that the few decent ideas from your bible were already in existence far earlier than your ignorant israelites.

        This isn’t “your” moral world.

It’s great that you have nothing but impotent threats, Chuck. Funny how your sadistic little fantasies have been lied about for 2000+ years and they still fail.

And there are far more commandments you are to follow than the first ten. So, how many adulterers have you killed, Chuck? What excuses will you give for you daring to ignore your god?

The Ten Commandments are summarized by Jesus as loving God above others and your neighbor as you love yourself (Matthew 22:37-39). I never said only Christianity has morals. I was saying that you (and other religions) borrow some of their morals from the Creator, who gave His law. Men and women pick and choose which morals they want to follow to the rejection of others.
It’s sad how people (like you) take issue with God punishing immoral people along with their families but say nothing of the millions of people barbarously murdering children in the womb (in all stages of gestation) through abortion.
Your questions about God and the Bible let me know you may know little to nothing about biblical hermeneutics.
If you seriously and civilly desire answers to your questions we can look at them one by one. But if you just want to attack me and Christianity let’s end the discussion now. Thank you.

Jesus says to follow *all* of the commandments, Chuck. He doesn’t say to stop at the first ten. You might want to read Matthew 7 too. No surprise that you choose not to follow your messiah when its inconvenient, Chuck. And no surprise that no self-professsed chrsitian can do what your supposed messiah promises to his true believers. Per the bible itself, you and all christians are evidently frauds.

Yep, you have claimed that only christians, like your version, have morals, and yep, you tried to lie and claim that we “borrow” from your nonsense when we don’t. The idea of do unto others was around far earlier than your ignorant tribalists. Again, surprise! you and all of the other chrsitiand don’t follow this god’s law. Jesus said to until the earth and heaven pass away. They are still around.

And yep, you pick and choose morals just like everyone else, and can’t show your god approving of your list.

Alas, christians can’t agree on what morality this god wants, so your claims of anyone being “immoral” is just a set of lies based on your nonsense, Chuck. Unsurprisingly, your god punishes no one being imaginary and impotent. The poor thing can’t even stop christians from raping children in its supposed “house”.

Funny how your god had no problem in murdering children in the womb, for actions they had no control over, etc. Seems your god is immoral, dear.

I know a lot about the bible and hermeneutics, the practice of christians to try to make their bible agree with them and them alone. Funny how you all claim to be the only “biblical” christians and yet, you can’t agree on the most basics things, Chuck.

These are all the things that self-professed christians can’t agree on:

        free will vs predestination
        how one is saved
        how to interpret the bible
        what morals this god wants
what baptism is and what it does
        what heaven and hell are
        etc.

I seriously want to you support your claims, Chuck. That you whine and claim that I must be “civil” to you, aka agreeing with anything yuo say and never showing you wrong, is typical.

Your christanity is nothing special, Chuck, amongst all of the many, many versions of it. Catholics, evangelicals, mormons, calvinists, anabaptists, etc. all differing.

Sure, there are a lot of things that self-professed “Christians” disagree on but there is only one “truth” and Jesus says in John 14:6 that He is the way, truth, and life and no one comes to the Father except through Him. You are a sinner by His judgment and He says you need to repent. Furthermore, Jesus says, unless you believe in Him (obey Him, follow Him, live for Him) you will die in your sins (John 8:24).

Like all christians, chuck, you claim anyone who doesn’t agree with your version isn’t a TrueChristian(tm) Funny how you can’t do what your supposed messiah promised. You seem to be a fraud, Chuck. You are a “Christian” just like they are.

Every christian, like you, claims that they and only they have the “truth”. it seems that none of you do.

It’s notable that john 14 days that all true believers will be able to get *any* prayer answered. Why can’t you? Jesus offers no excuses or exceptions of what prayers will be answered, and unfortunately, the gospel of john doesn’t have the lord’s prayer where you might try to appeal to prayers having to be already what his god already has planned.

“8 Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ 9 Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

15 ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.” John 14

Christians can’t agree on how one follows jesus, with you, again, unable to agree on what morals this character wants.

Repeating nonsense I already know quite well from the bible doesn’t make it true.
