As a Black man who also follows Christ and His Word, I wish we didn’t have a Black History Month. It is because of sin that there is discrimination, segregation, and racism.
I try to get people to ask themselves, “What if the government promoted “White History Month” and focused specifically on all the incredible contributions that white people have made?” Many would be offended by this. What if someone started an organization called, “NAAWP” (National Association for the Advancement of White People). Many would label that organization as “racist”.
I remember years ago as a pastor of a church connected with a large denomination, being asked to attend the meetings of a newly organized “African-American Advisory Council”. I was very much grieved that this kind of organization was being started in order to advise white people about the needs and sensitivities of black people so that they wouldn’t offend black people.
We create these organizations and feel the need to make these distinctions, though well intentioned, because of sin and its effects on the human race (Romans 5:12).
I appreciate a Facebook friend mentioning on his page that we are all made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Let’s remember, uplift, and amplify the voices and experiences of all people without paying attention to the color of their skin. Someone has fitly spoken that it is the “content of their character” that really counts.
Lastly, the Bible has the answer and all the advice and instructions we need to deal with discrimination or any other kind of sin on any level.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”
Not only do we have the teaching in Scripture, we have the enabling. 2 Peter 1:3 says, “seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.”
True unity is found in Jesus Christ:
“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” -Galatians 3:28
