This morning’s Bible reading was in 1 Corinthians chapters 1-4. In chapter one I observed and was reminded of the sovereign calling of the sinner to salvation to God’s doing for His own glory.

You can’t miss it unless you don’t want to see and believe the Bible’s teaching here. In chapter one alone of 1 Corinthians mentions God’s calling of the sinner to salvation several times: vss. 2, 9, 24, 26, 27 (twice), 28, and 30. Even without using the words, “called” and “chosen” we find in this chapter several implications that “salvation is (solely) of the Lord” (Psalm 3:8; Jonah 2:9).

In verses 30-31 the Apostle Paul concludes this chapter by letting us know that the Christian is “in Christ Jesus” “who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption” In other words, everything we needed to be saved from sin, and kept saved eternally, came from Jesus Christ.

Why? So that no one would boast in themselves that he or she had anything to do with this great salvation. The Bible says in verse 31, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
